Denver Press Club Members,
Lots of news today, so I hope you'll read this entire opening letter.
First, I want to tell you about an ambitious project the club has undertaken.
The Denver Press Club is bringing the renowned Capitol Steps to town for a performance at 5 p.m. Sunday, May 16, in the June Swaner Gates Concert Hall on the University of Denver campus.
I've seen the Capitol Steps perform twice, and many of you tell me you've seen them as well and can't wait to see them again on May 16.
They are just superb, hilarious, creative, imaginative, a joy to watch perform. Their spot-on satire skewers all sides of the political spectrum.
And with tickets costing just $45.50, it's a painless way to support the nation's oldest press club.
Download a one-pager that you can print out, copy and share with anyone you think would be interested in attending. I urge everyone reading this to help us reach our goal of selling more than 900 tickets, as we aim for a sellout. Please see complete details below under May 16.
Other DPC notes:
(1) Of course, the club's premier event of the year is the Damon Runyon Award Banquet, and we had a memorable one Friday night.
Honoree P.J. O'Rourke gave a humorous speech, complete with a not-surprisingly cynical take on politics. And our other speakers enriched the program: Rob Reuteman and Beth Gaeddert (Nakkula Award), Dan Haley (introducing P.J. O'Rourke), Jesse Horne of KUSA TV Channel 9 (his enthusiasm in introducing the scholarship winners is contagious) and emcee Mike Landess - was funny, smooth and in charge. Special thanks to Roxane White, chief of staff to Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper for reading Hizzoner's proclamation declaring last Friday to be P.J. O'Rourke Day in Denver.
And we have a corps of selfless volunteers who were a tremendous help Friday night, and in the weeks leading up to the Runyon. Our hearty thanks to them as well.
(2) What a week we have: book co-authors Adam Schrager of KUSA TV Channel 9 and former State Rep. Rob Witwer on Wednesday night; guest bartender Heidi McGuire and MetroMix friends on Thursday night, raising money for the 9Health Fair; and DPC board member Jennifer Shermer and her husband, Tom, on Friday night, raising money for the Denver Dumb Friends League. Please see full details below.
(3) And we have completed the booking of 3 more interesting events: Take a look at the Book Beats under April 26 (a rare luncheon) and June 22, and a special event on April 28.
Thanks
Bruce Goldberg
